The many and various ways I pass the time now has a new addition. Usually it involves drinking coffee whilst sitting at a computer keeping in touch with chums, or sipping wine sitting on our tiny terrace catching the sun, and wondering what else I can do to avoid any cleaning or tidying or putting away of stuff and things that aren't even MINE. And now I am going to type this blog. Provided that doesn't become a chore as well, in which case...

Stick it in the Family Album!

Our Ma's funeral will be at noon on Thursday 27 June. She will have a short service with minimal religious content, followed by a small afternoon wake at a pretty pub in his old home town.

Meanwhile I have been checking out what photos I have stored on this laptop in case my sister-in-law and the granddaughters want to see them next week.  I can arrange a short slide show and have them available to view at the wake.  This is probably my favourite of all, Our Ma with her precious pigeon pair, taken in the autumn of 1956, in the street where the she lived, in the same house, for fifty-five years.  The Bulmers were the first to be given the keys to the suburban new-build semi, as happy young parents in their late thirties, and it wasn't sold until May 2011, when Freddie was 93 and needed to be in residential care.

The Husband refers to himself in this photo as The Inflatable Turnip-Head.  This sight of his slightly grumpy and puzzled infant self always makes him laugh, well usually it does, but maybe not this week, eh?

Another tremendous photograph - one in which we can also lament the passing of the perambulator. These modern buggy things are not a patch on them.

The Camera has to have been one of THE best inventions ever. So much to find out from such a little space, recording in a way that words never can. ...all those years in one place. I think folk who can do that deserve a stability medal! Hugs, YAM xx

    1. You'd be hard pressed to fold that contraption up and get it on and off a bus, YAM! I guess in the days when all commumities had a shop that sold groceries, could maybe even run to a specialist butcher and greengrocer, a woman had no need to go into a larger town centre to food shop. Nowadays it's done by bus or car and the chidren and conveyance go in a vehicle.

I love that there is only ONE car visible in the street in 1956. Go back there now and there is an entire fleet parked.

  2. A super photo, Marion - the pram, Freddie's wrap-around coat with the belt and the sleeves gathered to a cuff, even the children's clothes - all as I remember from my childhood. Photos are so important at times like these to bring past and present together.

    1. It's my favourite of Our Ma. She looks to be such a proud mother, and I guess she was, as no children had shown up in well over a decade of marriage so she was offered very early hormone treatment to help conceive, what she always referred to as "horse tablets". She popped out my sister-in-law at the age of 37 and The Husband fourteen months later at 38, one of each in double quick time, most efficient of her!

    1. Isn't it. The Husband believes it was taken by his dad on the family box brownie. I love the fact that neither child is at all sure at being posed for it, and although he has their attention neither is smiling. Perhaps they are cross that their walk has been paused for it!
